My name is Brittan Sutphin and I am 19 years old.  I am a student at Claremont McKenna studying Spanish and Biochemistry (premed).  At age 16,  I was at my high school swim practice when I had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  Fortunately the pool had an AED and I was revived after multiple shocks. After a year of testing, I was finally diagnosed with CPVT as well as my brother and mother.   I was always healthy and played competitive sports since I was 5 years old.  I am a nationally ranked tennis player and had dreams of playing college tennis so it was a huge surprise to learn that I have this heart condition.  I decided I would do everything possible to live my life and pursue my dreams.  I had an ICD implanted, had a Denervation of the Left Cardiac Sympathetic Nerve and switched from Nadolol Beta Blockers to Flecainide.  I am playing college tennis and our team even made it to the top 8 nationals my freshman year.  My life has changed some since the diagnosis.  I am careful about swimming  and not drinking caffeine drinks.  I am not playing at the level of tennis I use to but I am grateful I can still play. I have become a spokesperson for SCA Awareness and speak at conferences about my story.  I am active in fundraising for AED's and I am an Ambassador of Advocates for Injured Athletes.  I have also gotten very involved in learning about the medical field and hope to become a physician scientist.   The experience hasn't changed me as a person, but it has changed my outlook on life.  I continue unshaken, knowing that the truest test of my ability is my determination to live bravely and to overcome the hardships of life. I was given a second chance and I intend to live it to the fullest.
