Dr. Ackerman speaks about genetic testing

At the 2010 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago SADS own board president, Dr. Michael Ackerman, co-moderated a session "Genetics Primer for the Physician".   Ackerman specifically spoke about genetic testing and physician interpretation of genetic tests.  With the recent onslought of new genetic tests hitting the market, and more on the way, Dr. Ackerman advises physicans to address three critical questions:

1. What do genetic test results deliver in terms of a diagnostic test, prognostic or therapeutic impact?
2. What is the yield of the genetic test; can yhou epect to find a mutation with any level of pre-test probability?
3. What is the background "noise" associated with the genetic test?

 These are all important points that physicians need to keep in mind when receiving and interpreting genetic test results.
