Sometimes a tax bill isn’t just about taxes. The implications for health care with the proposed Senate tax reform bill are very serious. Senators need to hear from their constituents on the importance of access to affordable health care.
The bill before the Senate on tax reform includes a provision to repeal the individual mandate for having health insurance, which is current law under the Affordable Care Act. The individual mandate is key to maintaining affordability of health insurance premiums. The bill effectively repeals the ACA without replacing it and requires huge cuts in discretionary health programs to pay for the tax cuts. There are also concerns about the viability of the essential health benefits package.
“This bill would limit funding for the Medicaid program, roll back important essential health benefit protections, and potentially open the door to annual and lifetime caps on coverage, endangering access to critical care for millions of Americans. Our organizations urge senators to oppose this legislation.
